Installation of a traffic signal to manage traffic; connection of sidewalks on either side of the railroad tracks near the intersection.
Why is It Important?
This multi-lane 4-way stop is inefficient and difficult to traverse safely. The adjacent railroad tracks complicate the intersection design, and will increase the cost of a traffic signal significantly due to the hardware and software needed to connect the railroad and street signals. Therefore, a roundabout was being considered as an alternative.
What is the Current Status?
The design for the traffic signal is approximately complete. The plans have been submitted to ArDOT for their review. The City is working with the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad (AMRR) to develop an agreement for the necessary railroad improvements associated with this project.
As an alternative, the City is looking into phasing the project to install the traffic signal as phase 1 and then following up with the lane additions as a future phase if funding is available. The City is working with ArDOT and the railroad to determine what is necessary to follow the phased approach.
When Will it be Completed?
After a final decision on the phasing is made, the railroad agreement and the ArDOT permitting will need to be completed. At that point he project can be let for bid. Construction could begin in late 2022.
How is it Funded?
Funding for the project comes from the Bond issue that voters approved in April 2019.
