Lewis Park Land Acquisition

What is this Project?

In partnership with Fayetteville Public Schools, the City of Fayetteville acquired Lewis Park from the University of Arkansas. The property was split with approximately half for the Parks Department and half for Fayetteville Public Schools.

Why is it important?

In 2018, there was tremendous support from the community for the City to purchase the Lewis Park property. The University of Arkansas Agricultural Department had decided to sell the 27 acres after the 25-year lease with the City expired. This property, primarily used for youth and adult soccer, is strategically located in the center of the City, a highly used green space, and is important to controlling stormwater runoff for the surrounding neighborhoods.

What is the current status?

This project is complete. The purchase was finalized in January 2020.

How was it funded?

Funding for the project was provided by the parks bond issue that Fayetteville voters approved in April of 2019. Purchase price with closing costs was $1,750,000.
