Short-term Rental Ordinance Approval Timeline
City Council Direction
It is estimated that there are approximately 500-600 short term rental units in Fayetteville. However, Fayetteville’s codes do not have specific rules or allowances for short term rentals.

Public Input Opportunity History
Step 1. Focus Group Meeting 1
As the first step in studying short-term rentals, the City hosted a focus group on August 19, 2019 to discuss the issue. The focus group represented various perspectives including neighborhood representatives and concerned citizens, rental owners and managers, and hotel owners. The group was guided by a professional facilitator to identify key issues and recommendations in moving forward with local rules for short-term rentals.
Step 2. Public Input Meeting
The City hosted a public input meeting about short-term rentals on September 30, 2019.
Step 3. Focus Group Meeting 2
On January 15, 2020, the City hosted a second focus group meeting to review and comment on the first draft code for short-term rentals.
Step 4. Planning Commission Meeting(s)
The draft code for short-term rentals was approved in February of 2020 by the Planning Commission. Staff presented a recommended code change along with alternatives. There were several members of the public at the meeting and a variety of perspectives were shared about how the city should handle short-term rentals.

Step 5: The City hosted a public input meeting about short-term rentals on November 5, 2019.
Step 6: A presentation of the draft code was presented to the City Council for their consideration and potential adoption on December 1, 2020. The Council moved to table the item until the January 5, 2021 Council meeting.
Step 7: A presentation of the draft code was presented to the City Council for their consideration and potential adoption on January 5, 2021. The Council moved to forward to the Ordinance Sub-Committee for further discussion and tabled the item date specific to the February 16, 2021 full Council meeting.
Step 8: The draft code was reviewed at Ordinance Sub-Committee on January 14, 2021 and forwarded back to Council for discussion.
Step 9: A presentation of the draft code was presented to the City Council for their consideration and potential adoption on February 16, 2021. The Council moved to forward to the Ordinance Sub-Committee for further discussion and tabled the item date specific to the March 16, 2021 full Council meeting.
City Council Meeting
The draft code was reviewed at Ordinance Sub-Committee on March 18, 2021 and forwarded back to Council for discussion. The full Council heard the draft code, as recommended by the Ordinance Sub-Committee, on April 6, 2021. This meeting allowed for public comment and staff presented amendments to the proposed ordinance based on feedback from Council and members of the public.
