Drake Field has a unique history behind it that has roots dating back to the early 1900s. In 2010, J. B. Hogan, a native of Fayetteville, and the late Kirby L. Estes wrote a piece in "Flashback", a journal of the Washington County Historical Society. J. B. Hogan is a prolific writer and Kirby L. Estes served as Poet Laureate of Fayetteville from April 2006 to April 2007. Below we have provided the article which is dedicated to the memory of Glenn D. Estes, the first flight service station chief at Drake Field and father of Kirby Estes.
