City of Fayetteville Wins Recycling Education Program of the Year Award
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The City of Fayetteville’s Recycling and Trash Division recently received the Arkansas Recycling Coalition's 2021 Recycling Education Program of the Year for its residential food waste drop-off program. The award honors a city, agency or association that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of waste reduction, recycling and sustainability in Arkansas over the past year. On hand to accept the award for the City were Waste Reduction Coordinator Brian Pugh and Environmental Educator Heather Ellzey.
The City’s residential food-waste drop-off program encourages Fayetteville residents to collect their food waste at home and bring it to one of the City’s five drop-off locations. The waste is then brought to Fayetteville’s Compost Facility where it is turned into nutrient-rich compost that can be purchased for use in gardening and landscaping. The program helps to keep organic matter out of the City’s landfill, thereby cutting down on the amount of the greenhouse gas methane produced.
The City currently has food waste drop-offs at the Marion Orton Recycling Center, the Happy Hollow Recycling Center, the Yacht Club on College Ave., Trinity United Methodist Church, and the Fayetteville Compost Facility. Fayetteville’s Recycling and Trash Division are providing free 3.5- and 5-gallon buckets and lids to Fayetteville residents to facilitate participation in the program.
Founded in 1989, the Arkansas Recycling Coalition unites companies, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and individuals in a common effort to promote reduce, reuse, recycle, and sustainability as a primary means of waste management in Arkansas.
