Prescribed Burn at Callie’s Prairie at Lake Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — In an effort to restore the natural vegetation at Lake Fayetteville, the City of Fayetteville is planning a prescribed burn to aid in prairie restoration and site preparation, and to create a favorable environment for native plants.

The burn is to be scheduled in the coming weeks, depending on weather conditions. Once weather conditions are suitable, the burn will take place at Callie’s Prairie on approximately 26 acres north of the Environmental Study Center located on Lakeview Drive. For safety reasons, public access around the prairie and along the paved and natural surface trails will be limited while the burn is occurring.

Ozark Ecological Restoration Inc., an experienced and trained burn contractor, will conduct the burn in cooperation with the City’s Public Works Department. Prior to the completion of the burn, crews will assure that all sparks and embers have been fully extinguished. Fayetteville and Springdale fire departments will be notified and on standby status to assist, if needed. The burns will only be implemented under a strict set of weather and environmental parameters such as fuel, moisture, relative humidity and smoke dispersion indices.

Citizens may see or smell smoke on the day the burn is conducted until ignition operations are complete. Public safety is the top priority for the City and its contractor. Further information will be forthcoming once weather conditions are suitable and the burn date is determined.
