City Begins Wilson Park Renovations and Installation of
New Playground Facilities
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville begins renovations in the northwest portion of Wilson Park this week. The work includes:
  • Prospect Street entry drive reconstruction,
  • designated striping in parking areas,
  • addition of curb and gutter,
  • replacement of the two existing playgrounds,
  • installation of a new musical playground.
Demolition of the entry drive and parking lot will begin immediately, followed by removal of existing playground equipment. The playground area will be regraded in preparation for the new facilities.
The new playground equipment is currently being manufactured and is expected to be shipped in four to six weeks. This work is expected to begin in mid-March and completed as soon as possible thereafter.
The new playground facility will consolidate the two existing playgrounds into a more compact play area that will accommodate early childhood and intermediate users. It will consist of one large play structure offering a variety of opportunities for ages 5 to 12; a similar small play structure for ages 2 to 5; and a variety of freestanding components, games, and benches. The fall-zone areas beneath the play equipment will be surfaced with impact-absorbing, resilient rubber tiles for safety. The larger play structure will be located on the same site as the existing intermediate playground, while the smaller structure will be located east of the existing picnic shelter.
Additionally, the City will be constructing a separate musical playground made possible through a generous donation from local developer, Fadil Bayyari. This facility will consist of several freestanding, musically-tuned percussion instruments and a variety of drums – each offering a unique sound. The facility will be wheelchair accessible and will allow kids and adults of all abilities the opportunity to create music in an open-air setting. The musical playground will be located near the smaller playground, just east of the picnic shelter.
The adjacent parking lot and entry drive will also receive upgrades. Asphalt on the western-most entry drive off Prospect Street will be removed and replaced with a one-way drive from Prospect to the parking lot. Concrete curb and gutter will be added to this drive and the northwest side of the parking lot to help contain parking and redirect stormwater. The new drive will feature five designated parking spaces on the west side and the lot will be striped for parking.
The safety of the public during this construction is of utmost importance. Every effort will be made to minimize disturbance to park activities; however, it will be necessary to close the entry drive and parking lot for up to 60 days during construction. Please use caution while near the construction zone. Park enthusiasts are encouraged to explore other parks in the City.
